D.T. (Tommy) Spitzer Obituary

Delmus Thomas Spitzer, 93, of Clifton passed away on Monday, September 16, at Goodall-Witcher Hospital in Clifton. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, September 20, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery with Pastor R. Don Wright officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Thursday, September 19, 2019 at Clifton Funeral Home.

Tommy was born on April 1, 1926 in the Womack Community to Gustav and Matilda (Buddenburg) Spitzer. He was confirmed on April 5, 1942 at the Zion Evangelical Church in Womack. He attended the Garnersville Public School. Tommy ran away from home along with a neighbor of his and volunteered for military service (before he was drafted). On July 19, 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. On Christmas 1944, he left San Diego, CA to a destination in the Pacific. On April 1, 1945, (his 19th birthday), he landed on Okinawa. U. S. Troops secured Okinawa on June 21, 1945. He was then sent to what is now known as Beijing, China. He was discharged from active duty on August 22, 1946 with the rank of Corporal.

Tommy returned to Clifton and bought land east of Clifton, which he farmed and raised cattle, along with driving a Humble (Enco-Exxon) gas truck for S.E. Ragsdale for many years. He then went to work for Boise Cascade Building Materials which later changed hands to Lowe’s. After his retirement from Lowe’s he continued to farm and raise cattle until his health prevented it.

Tommy married Hazel Levon Oswald on November 16, 1948. They were married for 69 years and had two children. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Clifton.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing (when time would allow in his earlier years). He also liked playing dominos and bingo, plus watching sports on tv.

Tommy was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel; his parents; grandson, Thomas Spitzer; and siblings, Albert, Alvin, Ella, Edna, Alice, and Gussie Lee.

He is survived by his daughter, Janet Corpier and husband, David of Clifton; son, John Spitzer and wife, Jean of New Braunfels; grandchildren, Derek Corpier, Brandi Corpier, and Nicholas Spitzer; and sister, Lula Duren.

The family would like to thank Dr. Rob Wageneck, the staff at Hospice Sunset, G-W Hospital, and G-W Nursing Facility.
