Elmo Hiram Nowlain

Elmo Hiram Nowlain, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed from this life on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. He was born on October 18, 1945, in San Angelo, Texas. Throughout his 80 years, Elmo was known for his strong faith, love of family, generous spirit, and unwavering determination.

His relationship with God was at the center of his life. Elmo loved attending church and learning more about his Heavenly Father, and his faith shaped the way he lived and treated others. He believed in forgiveness and second chances, often reminding those around him that God had given him another chance many times. He tried to offer that same grace to others.

Elmo married Wanda Carnes Evans on August 9, 2003. They shared 23 years together, building a life filled with love, laughter, and treasured memories. He was happiest when surrounded by family and took great pride in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda Carnes Nowlain; his children, Teresa Reid of Clifton, Texas; Cindy Forsythe and husband, Braden, of Spring, Texas; George Nowlain and wife, Alison, of Richmond, Texas; Richard Nowlain and wife, Sandie, of Meridian, Texas; Valerie Stegemoller and husband, Scot, of Nevada; C.W. Carnes and wife, Bailey, of Aubrey, Texas; and Geneva “Sissy” Carnes of Clifton, Texas. He also leaves behind 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who brought him tremendous joy.

Elmo is also survived by his sister, Nell Spence of Hamilton, Texas; his brothers, Noble Nowlain and wife, Frances, of Hamilton, Texas, and Dub Nowlain of San Angelo, Texas; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Elmo enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He loved music, looked forward to his daily games of solitaire, and especially enjoyed playing games with his grandbabies. Their laughter was among his favorite sounds.

He was a hard worker who took pride in what he did and was not easily discouraged. Elmo was always willing to lend a helping hand or listen when someone needed him. He had a way of making people feel welcome and was quick to look for the good in others.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Nowlain and Una Mae Green Nowlain; his brother, George Nowlain; and his grandson, Christopher Ross Reid.

Elmo leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured in accomplishments or possessions, but in the people, he loved, the lives he encouraged, and the kindness he showed. His family and friends will remember his laughter, his perseverance, his generous heart, and the faith that carried him throughout his life.

Though he will be deeply missed, Elmo’s loved ones take comfort in knowing that he has gone home to his Heavenly Father. His memory will remain a cherished part of the lives of all who were blessed to know him.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, August 22, 2026 at Clifton Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Lanes Chapel Cemetery.
