Doris Jane Stevens, beloved professor of sociology at McClennon Community College in Waco, born on September 6, 1932, passed away on October 29, 2025, leaving a profound legacy in the field of education and in the lives of those she impacted. Doris was committed to harnessing the power of education to transform the lives of students, their families, and their communities. Her nurturing spirit and dedication to the academic pursuit were evident in her teaching, where she meticulously guided students through the complexities of societal and psychological influences underlying social problems and family relationships.

Doris's academic journey began at Austin High School, from which she graduated in the class of 1950. She pursued higher education at the University of Texas at Austin, earning a Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. by 1974. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.

Apart from her academic endeavors, Doris had a vibrant personality characterized by her passion for art, travel, and exploration. She held a particular fondness for art museums and cherished meaningful conversations. Her travels often took her to New York City, where she found inspiration and joy. In addition to her professional commitments, Doris indulged in hobbies such as reading, needlework, and gardening, which added a rich texture to her life.

A devoted member of the 7th and James Baptist Church, Doris exemplified dedication not only in her professional life but also in her community, advocating for the expansion of women's roles in both professional fields and the church. Her deep belief in social justice and human rights resonated in her work and personal philosophy, motivating countless others to join her in these causes.

Doris is survived by her two sons, Timothy and James, who carry forward her legacy of commitment to education and compassion. She was predeceased by her husband, Joe Stevens, in 2000; her brother, Dwight Franklin Henderson, in 2025; and her parents, Ottis F. and Leona (Bradford) Henderson.

A graveside service will be held in Doris's honor at Lanes Chapel Cemetery in Clifton, Texas, on November 1, 2025, at 11:00 AM. Doris Jane Stevens will be remembered not only for her academic excellence and advocacy but also for her unwavering love for life, art, and the profound connections she fostered throughout her journey.
