Elsie Johnson Obituary

Elsie Marine Johnson, 99, slipped peacefully into eternity on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, with her family at her side.  Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 22, 2022, at Grove Hill Memorial Park, 3920 Samuell Blvd., Dallas, TX 75228.  Elsie will lie in state from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 21, at Clifton Funeral Home.

Elsie was born March 4, 1923, the first of nine children blessed to Albion and Dora (Jackson) Welch.  She grew up on her family's farm outside of Henderson, Texas, and was a graduate of the community school that eventually became Henderson High School.

Elsie married John Alton Campbell in Dallas on May 18, 1942, and together they had a son, James. The couple were long-time employees of the Veterans Administration in Dallas and Waco, where Elsie was an executive assistant. John preceded her in death in 1971.  In April 1983, Elsie married Frank James Johnson.  Frank preceded her in death in 1987.

Elsie was a pistol.  Strong, hard-working, determined, faithful and witty, she truly was an example of the Greatest Generation.  As a mother to James, she was fierce, forgiving, forever present and intensely loving.  She befriended, adored and enjoyed spending time with Elisa, her daughter-in-law of 48 years.  Her puppies, church, travel and community activities fulfilled her.  Since 2017, Elsie has lived at the Sunset Home in Clifton, Texas.  The family is forever grateful to the staff there for years of excellent care, most especially Kim Webb.

Elsie is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James and Elisa Campbell of Clifton; brother, Clifton Welch of Cedar Hill, and his wife, Mondell; brother-in-law, Robert Williams; and nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Albion and Dora Welch; and her siblings, Mary Lois Johnson, Byron Welch, Mildred Cannon, Alera Welch, Jarvis Welch, Floyd Welch, and Patsy Williams.

Charitable donations in Elsie's memory may be made to Bosque Animal Rescue Kennels (BARK), P. O. Box 264, Clifton, TX 76634.
