Charles N. Raines

Charles Nelson Raines, 86, of Clifton passed away Saturday, October 24, 2020 at Lutheran Sunset Ministries. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 A.M. Friday, October 30, 2020 at Smith Bend-Coon Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 A.M. Friday, October 30, 2020 at Clifton Funeral Home. 

Charles was born at his family home on September 5, 1934 in the Smith Bend Community of Bosque County to Virgil and Faye Raines. He attended elementary school at Smith Bend and graduated from Clifton High School. After high school, he attended Clifton College and Continued his education at Baylor University graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Education. On July 13, 1958, he married Janis Mary Forson. They had four children, Charles Wayne, Norman Craig, Dana DeAnne, and Holly June. Charles taught at Morgan ISD for several years and then became employed at O.E. Schow Lumber Company.  In 1967, they moved to Richardson where he was employed at Texas Instruments and returned to Clifton in 1970. Upon returning to Clifton, he opened Clifton Lumber Company, after the lumber yard closed, he continued to build and remodel homes until his retirement.

In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his boys, especially duck hunting. He also enjoyed playing Wahoo, which he made his kids and grandkids a Wahoo board of their own.

Some of his hobbies included wood working, shelling pecans, visiting with people and he loved having coffee with his friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janis; parents, Virgil and Faye; baby sister, Betty Ruth; and his brother, Billy Joe.

He is survived by his children, Charles W. Raines and wife, Shelly of Waco, Craig Raines of Clifton, Dana Philipp and husband, Steven of Clifton, and Holly Raines of Colorado; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
