Vernon Simmons Obituary

Vernon Lee Simmons,73, of Jonesboro lost his battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Surrounded by family, he walked into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, July 8, 2019. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 20, 2019 at Jonesboro Baptist Church.

Vernon was born on April 02, 1946 to the late Freida Squyres Simmons and Walter Lee Simmons in Fort Worth, Texas. He was a post war baby, born at the beginning of the baby boom; he was his parents only child. He moved to Jonesboro in the early 1950’s and started school and graduated from Jonesboro High School. He made his way back to Cowtown where he worked in the aircraft industry, drank “cold Fort Worth beer” and eventually met the love of his life and began a family. In 1977 he welcomed the birth of his only child, a daughter, Stacie Leeann. He was a farm kid who had a passion for hunting and fishing. He was an avid collector of antique tractors and Model A cars. He was a grease monkey that loved to hear the purr of the engine, scrap yards, and hunks of junk. He enjoyed singing karaoke and silly rhymes he made up. He loved to travel and to visit people either living or at the cemetery. He always had a Texas sized tale to tell anyone who would listen. He was a two-stepping cowboy that loved to dance the night away. He will always be remembered for his bright eyes, beautiful smile, terrible jokes, and for his white buttoned down shirt, wrangler jeans, cowboy boots, and his name on the back of his belt. Later in life Vernon became the proud grandfather to Caitlynn and Hunter Howell who he enjoyed toting around the farm on tractors and in his Model A Fords.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Freida and Walter Simmons.

Vernon is survived by his daughter Stacie Howell Orr and husband Michael; grandchildren, Caitlynn Howell, Hunter Howell; his special friend Demetra, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Special Thanks to the staff at Lutheran Sunset Ministries and Dr. Justin Squyres.

Memorials may be made to Jonesboro Baptist Church at 11420 N. State Hwy 36 Jonesboro, Texas 76538.
